6.8 Billion Yuan Worth of Robot Dogs Officially Join Power Grid

In August 2026, an unmanned substation in Dongguan welcomed a special group of on-duty staff: 18 quadruped robot dogs.

No on-site human monitoring is required. Operators can dispatch inspection tasks with one click from the backend, and the robots autonomously inspect all equipment across the substation. State Grid has rolled out a landmark procurement plan: a CNY 6.8 billion investment in embodied intelligence projects. Of this budget, CNY 1.5 billion is earmarked for 5,000 quadruped robot dogs alone, which will be deployed at mountainous power grid sites and substations.

When people mention robot dogs, most still picture them performing on stage: in the Winter Olympics parade, or throwing discus at the Asian Games. They were once viral showstoppers.

Many assume the robot dogs stepped out of show venues thanks to sudden technological breakthroughs. The truth is far simpler: price barriers have been broken down.

Once priced at over 500,000 yuan per unit, why were quadruped robot dogs so expensive?

Robot dogs, formally known as quadruped robots, can climb stairs, traverse rocky terrain, and get back up after falling. Let’s compare the roles of three types of robots:

  • · Wheeled robots: Efficient on flat ground, yet unable to negotiate stairs or mountainous areas.
  • · Quadruped robot dogs: Capable of navigating complex terrain freely, ideal for reconnaissance in hazardous zones.
  • · Humanoid robots: The most versatile, but prohibitively costly and difficult to mass-produce in the short term.

The benchmark product in the early years was Boston Dynamics’ Spot, which cost over 500,000 yuan per unit.

The root cause of its high price: core joint motors, LiDAR and depth cameras were supplied by only a handful of vendors, and each unit was built as a low-volume custom system. Simply put, it used to be lab research hardware rather than a mass-market product, and scarcity drove up the price.

From 500,000 Yuan down to 8,000 Yuan: the 10,000-Yuan threshold shattered

The turning point came in 2023. Unitree launched its consumer-grade quadruped robot Go2. The Air version was priced at 9,997 yuan, pulling quadruped robots straight into the 10,000-yuan price bracket. By the 2026 shopping promotions, the lowest price dropped to around 8,500 yuan.

The price decline stems from three combined factors: in-house development of core hardware, a mature supply chain, and cost dilution via large-scale shipments.

  • · Self-developed motors and LiDAR keep the priciest components in-house, freeing the firm from supplier bottlenecks.
  • · Shipments surged. Unitree has delivered over 30,000 units in total, holding nearly 70% of the global market share. Higher production volume drives down per-unit costs, following the same cost curve seen in the smartphone industry.

Competition in this track has intensified. Dobot and Xiaomi have rolled out their own quadruped robots at around 10,000 yuan. Manufacturers aim to bring consumer models down to 3,000–4,000 yuan in the long run.

It is not that the robot dogs have been downgraded. Instead, the industry has turned the core capability — stable locomotion on four legs — into an affordable baseline feature.

From Stage Shows to High-Risk Frontlines

Once prices fell, quadruped robot dogs quickly moved away from show venues and took on tough jobs that few people are willing to do.

Power Grid Inspection (the largest application scenario) Substations deep in mountainous areas feature harsh conditions. Human inspectors must trek across rugged hills, a dangerous role that struggles to attract workers. Pilot deployments have been rolled out at substations in Taizhou, Xiong’an, Xishuangbanna and Dongguan. The robot dogs automatically measure temperature and send photos back, with operators controlling everything remotely from the backend.

Firefighting & Rescue Personnel cannot safely enter rubble or high-risk fire zones. The DeepSeek Robotics Jueying quadruped robot can climb slopes up to 45 degrees, enter collapsed structures to locate trapped victims, and carry out reconnaissance before rescue teams move in.

Park & Campus Security Multiple robots patrol autonomously in formation at night and trigger alerts automatically when anomalies are detected.

To sum up the core value of quadruped robot dogs: they work in places people do not want to, or dare not, go.

Don’t Rush Into a Home Robot Dog — It Has Clear Drawbacks

Quadruped robots shine in industrial scenarios, but think twice before buying one as a pet substitute.

❌ Short battery life: Rated for 1–2 hours runtime. This drops sharply when climbing or trotting, meaning frequent recharging.

❌ Noticeable noise, plus a payload of only a few kilograms — it cannot realistically carry parcels.

❌ Built-in mobile cameras raise privacy concerns at home. Service centers for this sophisticated equipment are scarce.

Buyer demographics have shifted. Early sales mostly went to university labs. From 2025 onwards, home consumer purchases have risen to account for 40% of total sales.

Ask yourself three questions before ordering: Can you accept its short battery life? Will its noise disturb neighbours? Where will you get it repaired if it breaks? If you are unsure about any of these, a real dog is still the better choice.

Robot Dogs Are Not Stealing Jobs — They Fill Roles No One Wants

Many fear robots will take people’s jobs, but that is not the case. Positions such as mountain grid inspection, underground utility tunnel patrol and disaster-site rubble search feature tough, high-risk working conditions that young people are already reluctant to take.

Quadruped robot dogs handle on-site surveys and data collection, while human workers move to backend roles for task dispatching and anomaly analysis. New jobs are also created for robot operation, commissioning and maintenance.

The 10,000-yuan price barrier has been broken, yet household adoption is still far away. Bottlenecks including battery life, applicable scenarios and after-sales support remain, so impulse purchases are not recommended.

The robot dogs on duty at the Dongguan substation and those performing at the Asian Games represent two eras of the same product. Only after stable four-legged locomotion became affordable could these robots start to work for real.

Next time you watch videos of robot dogs doing flips, look beyond the spectacle. Check two things: is it deployed for practical work, or just a stage demo? Can the investment deliver a clear business case? If not, it is mostly hype.

Robot dogs may not end up in your living room, but tough and high-risk worksites will soon welcome these four-legged new colleagues.
